turning your orbit around

or... the utter enormity of the task

another new song...

this one has no music yet. it seems my favorite subjects of late are marginal men and seedy situations. let me know what you think. the rhyme scheme for the verses is aabaab.

holed up and waiting

There’s something in the change
An echo in the name
A ghostly neon likeness
Out the dirty window panes
Far across the bay
Don’t know the truth, can’t try to hide it

Knee shakes and earthquakes
Round the corner in the rain
Tobacco on the tongue
Cut coffee with cane
It’s all the same
There’s a grand on the table and a gun

I can’t think
I need a drink
Blink at myself
Over the sink
Splash cold water
And I’m back from the brink
I need a drink
I can’t think

An insurgent resurgence
Light it but don’t burn it
Self-righteous indignation
Paranoid with yearning
Tired of this burning
God’s getting just a little impatient

Blistered and raw
Rosin bow and a saw
Diluted dust in the air
The blow and the fall
A tailspin and a stall
A broken jaw and a thousand yard stare

Dirty tile creaky chairs
Waiting for shoes on the stairs
Streetlights slant in through the blinds
Just a little impaired
But why should they care
It’s their junk now and not mine

Knee shakes and earthquakes
Round the corner in the rain
Tobacco on the tongue
Cut coffee with cane
It’s all the same
There’s a grand on the table and a gun

I can’t think
I need a drink
Blink at myself
Over the sink
Splash cold water
And I’m back from the brink
I need a drink
I can't think

new song

folks,

got a new song. the verse/prechorus is all set (a simple tweedyesque walk down from D to G with Bm F#m G as the prechorus), but i have no idea what to do for the main chorus. oh well, it'll come.

Imaginary Eulogies

-V.1-
Driving round
Sooty snowy streets downtown
I’m thinking about going underground
And I don’t know which is worse
Panic or pleasure
The music or the measure
Of this dirty melody we just found

-V.2-
Twelve degrees
Snow in the air like buzzing bees
Sidewalk litanies of car keys
And blinkers blink red
Stoplights turn green
A passenger pondering
Imaginary eulogies

-Chorus-
Brick walls pockmarked and scarred
Just another passing of the guard
Cover half the distance in twice as far
Just another passing of the guard

-V.3-
A frozen stream
Regret in the air like geyser steam
Half pint flask of bourbon Jim Beam
And this bench is cold metal
These papers water-stained
It’s these gestures that we feign
All scored by Coltrane’s Love Supreme

-Chorus-
Brick walls pockmarked and scarred
Just another changing of the guard
Cover half the distance in twice as far
Just another changing of the guard

-Outro-
Imaginary eulogies
Given away for free

feeling blurbie

folks,

some blurbs about my life (and the lives of those in my orbit):

* becca (timmy's sister) is engaged. a hearty congratulations to a wonderful young woman - i look forward to meeting your guy, whenever that may be.

* robbie dudie is dating a swimsuit model. you stud.

* jebus had a gig in golden last week (that's on the front range west of denver), and one here in steamboat on saturday. they were both sloppy, but fun. we'll have another on saturday, 4/7, at pirates pub in steamboat.

* through a fairly fortuitous turn of events (and some fantastic sales), i now have a sweet 5-weight flyrod & reel that cost $75 to set up, which makes my quiver complete: a 3 weight, 4 weight, 5 weight, & 6 weight. make no bones about it people - i am a fly fishing geek.

* trout & kg visited this weekend, and it was a really great time. coffee was imbibed, donuts were eaten, jackets were purchased, and the fishing was unsuccessful but beautiful. very much looking forward to spending time with them in the 5400 this spring/summer.

* j is not the executive director of the arts council, and she's absolutely okay with that. the woman coming in is really outstanding, and j is very excited about working with her.

that's the latest. sorry for the infrequent posts - my life gets busier and busier. on a related note, i'm closing in on 10,000 visits to this blog; i'm not sure what its fate will be when we hit that mark. we shall see.

thanks for reading!
